Every Silvay piece is made in 925 sterling silver and carries a BIS hallmark. Here is what that means.
What is 925 sterling silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining 7.5% made up of other metals, usually copper, which add strength so that jewellery keeps its shape in everyday wear. The number 925 is its purity grade. Pure silver on its own is too soft for jewellery.
What is BIS hallmarking?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards body. A BIS hallmark shows that a piece of jewellery has been tested at a recognised centre and that its purity matches the grade marked on it. It is an independent check, so you do not have to rely on a seller’s word alone.
How to spot the hallmark
Look for the small stamp on the piece, often on the clasp, the inside of a ring or a tag on the chain. It includes the BIS mark and the purity grade, 925. On very small pieces the marking may be tiny, so a magnifying glass helps. If you would like help finding it, message us.
Caring for your silver
- Keep it away from perfume, water and chemicals.
- Store it in the pouch provided when you are not wearing it.
- Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to keep the shine.
- Silver can darken naturally over time. This is normal and is not a sign of poor quality.
